Welcome to an exciting year at Washington Elementary School.  I’m Mr. Muehlbauer, the school counselor, and I look forward to working with you and your child.  The Guidance Office is located across from Room 102 and my phone number is 493-0812.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child, don’t hesitate to call me.

The Guidance Department offers a variety of services for students and parents, such as classroom guidance instruction, large/small group activities, individual/small group counseling, conflict resolution, attendance monitoring, referral services, and system support for the entire building.  This department also coordinates MAP and Acuity standardized testing program each year.

During regular classroom visits, the following character traits will be discussed:  self-esteem, responsibility, respect, caring, honesty, cooperation, self-discipline, problem-solving, decision-making, and perseverance.  Other topics such as test-taking skills, study skills, drug awareness, and peer relations will also be covered.

Students have an opportunity to visit the counselor to discuss individual problems daily.  Teachers are provided a schedule of individual and group counseling times.  Students simply request to come to my office by talking to either their classroom teacher or directly to me.  Small group counseling sessions are also available to address issues that are similar among certain students.  Sessions allow students to develop insight that enables them to understand and modify their feelings and attitudes, as well as assist them in identifying and choosing positive behavior.

This guidance department also provides families with referrals to outside resources in times of family crisis, whether its utility support, clothing/food needs, or counseling/health services.  The goal is for the school to help our families in any way possible.  Just call my office and we’ll discuss options available to meet your needs.
